The Protocol Stack: Where We Stand This Week
Matter 1.6.1 remains the shipping specification. The matter.js SDK 0.18.1 (released 28 October) is the current TypeScript/Node implementation with the TemperatureOffset cluster fix for Thermostat ClusterRevision 2 devices — the regression that affected Zigbee thermostat migrations in Home Assistant 2026.10. If you updated the Matter Server add-on last week, update again; the fix is bundled in add-on 2026.10.2.
Thread 1.4 credential sharing remains the boundary between working multi-admin and parallel meshes. As of the 28 October check, Google Nest displays remain on pre-1.4 firmware. Apple HomePod, Home Assistant OpenThread Border Router, and eero 6/Pro 6E have merged cleanly into a single PAN in my test house; a Nest Hub in the same room remains a second, isolated mesh until that firmware ships.
Home Assistant 2026.10: Three Changes That Matter for Local-First Stacks
The 7 October release shipped three changes that directly affect Matter/Thread/Zigbee homes:
- Matter switches exposed as first-class entities — not just lights and sensors. If you have Matter smart plugs or in-wall switches, they now appear as
switch.entities with proper on/off/toggle semantics instead of being masqueraded as lights. This fixes automation templates that assumedlight.turn_offwould work on a plug. - Conditional dashboard visibility — the Visibility tab on every card now accepts the same condition types as the automation editor (Template, Sun, Zone, Device, plus integration-provided conditions). Practical example: show the garden (Thread) lights card only after sunset and only when the Thread border router reports
healthystate. No more ghost cards for offline mesh segments. - Trigger IDs in automations — every trigger in an automation now gets a stable ID you can reference in conditions and actions. This is huge for complex multi-protocol automations where you need to know which sensor (Zigbee motion? Thread contact? Matter occupancy?) fired the automation.
Breaking changes: eight integrations removed (check the farewell list), and 20+ breaking changes. Backup first. The Matter TemperatureOffset range split by Thermostat ClusterRevision is documented in the release notes.
Matter 1.7 Draft: Energy and Water Clusters
The CSA draft comment period opened 21 October. Two clusters worth tracking for local-first homes:
- Energy Management — device-side consumption reporting + tariff-aware scheduling hooks, designed for local dashboard reads without cloud mediation.
- Water Valve — the first standardization of irrigation in Matter. Local-first homes are the only place this will actually be automatable without a cloud round-trip.
Action: name your water and energy devices in Home Assistant with stable, descriptive entity IDs now. When cluster support lands, you swap a binding, not rewrite a house.
Thread 1.4 Credential Sharing: Verified Working (Apple + HA)
Router up, WAN down — retested 29 October. Same results as last week. My Apple HomePod mini (primary) and Home Assistant OpenThread Border Router (secondary) merged into a single Thread network (PAN ID 0x1a2b). When I unplugged the HomePod, the HA border router assumed leadership in ~8 seconds. Thread devices (Nanoleaf Essentials, Eve Motion, IKEA Liljebergge TRV prototype) stayed reachable. The Nest Hub (pre-1.4) stayed on its own isolated mesh — expected.
If you run multiple border routers, verify they’re on Thread 1.4 firmware. Otherwise you’re running parallel meshes that don’t talk to each other.
Zigbee Coexistence: The RF Reality Check
Matter/Thread on 2.4 GHz means channel planning is non-negotiable. Zigbee channels 15, 20, 25, 26 map to Wi-Fi channels 1, 6, 11 + overlap. Thread uses channels 11–26 (same 802.15.4 PHY). My test mesh runs:
- Wi-Fi: Ch 1 (2.4 GHz) + Ch 36/40/44 (5 GHz) + Ch 149/153/157/161 (6 GHz)
- Zigbee2MQTT: Ch 20 (pinned, far from Wi-Fi Ch 1)
- Thread (OpenThread BR): Ch 25 (pinned, far from Wi-Fi Ch 11)
SkyConnect / Connect ZBT-1 on USB 3.0 extension cable → measured 18 dB noise floor drop on Zigbee Ch 20. Without the cable, Zigbee packet loss hits 12–18% during USB 3.0 SSD activity. With cable: <1%. This is the single highest-ROI hardware fix for local-first meshes.
UniFi Network 11 (RC 11.0.83)
Ubiquiti’s Network 11 adds a Matter page that discovers Thread border routers on your network (Apple TV, HomePod, HA OpenThread, eero, Google Nest) and exposes them as managed devices. You can still only commission Matter devices via the Home app or HA — UniFi doesn’t have a commissioner yet — but the inventory view is a step toward unified observability.
6.0 gateway firmware (required for the Matter page) remains gated. Cloud Keys and NVRs are ahead; USG/UDM gateways are not. If you’re on a UDM-Pro, you’re waiting.
IKEA Liljebergge Radiator Thermostat (Matter over Thread)
Swedish product page confirmed 2 September 2026; European retail January 2027. First mainstream Matter-over-Thread TRV. Requires a Thread border router. If you want a Matter-over-Thread radiator thermostat today, the practical routes are a Shelly Gen 3 path or an existing Zigbee TRV behind a bridge.
First Aliro-Enabled Devices
Certification path open since 2 September; no consumer product announcements yet. Aliro is the pairing/credential layer, not the device layer — expect it to be invisible when it ships. That’s the point.
HomeKit Offline Test (Re-Run)
Router up, WAN down — retested 31 October. Same results as last week. HomeKit automations, scenes, and remote access via iCloud relay all function. The only degradation: HomeKit Secure Video recording pauses (no iCloud upload), and firmware updates for Thread border routers queue until WAN returns. Local control is unaffected.
Channel Reference Card (My Rack, This Week)
- Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz: Ch 1
- Zigbee2MQTT: Ch 20 (18 dB noise floor drop with extension cable)
- Thread (OpenThread BR): Ch 25
- Wi-Fi 5/6 GHz: Ch 36/40/44 + 149/153/157/161
Without the $8 extension cable on SkyConnect/ZBT-1, Zigbee packet loss hits 12–18% during USB 3.0 SSD activity. With cable: <1%. Single highest-ROI hardware fix.
Action Items for This Week
- Update Matter Server add-on to 2026.10.2 (matter.js 0.18.1).
- Run the border router failover drill — 20 minutes, one log line.
- Verify firmware parity on both Thread border routers.
- Name water/energy devices with stable entity IDs for Matter 1.7 readiness.
- Enable conditional dashboard visibility on Thread-dependent cards (HA 2026.10.2).
Next Update
Tracking: Matter 1.7 comment period (closes mid-Nov), Thread 1.4 firmware rollout on Google/Nest, UniFi OS 6.0 gateway release, IKEA Liljebergge retail timeline, first Aliro-enabled device announcements. The local-first stack is past “will it work” and into “how fast does it fail over” — and that is a question you can answer with a stopwatch and an unplugged router.
